2007-06-18 02:43:42 GMT

Hey, Ashley McKinzie reporting in, I just got into Lincoln. It's uh, I guess it's about 8. Actually I've been here a little while. Took a shower because it was pretty cold out today. I guess everybody probably on the ride knows that. Pretty brutal. Anyway, here in Lincoln, feeling pretty good, 8:30, about to get something to eat. Later.
2007-06-18 02:39:19 GMT

Yeah, Mr Purvis. My name is Mike Gibney, Mike Gibney's dad. He left a message about happy Father's Day. When he calls in again would you tell him that I got the message, and thank you, and I love him too. Thanks Tom, bye.

Mr. Gibney, I'll do what I can to get him the message. Let me wish you happy Father's Day too. -Tom P.

Hi, this is Steve McGuire calling in from Ovando. Got here about 7:40. Lots of rain today. All in all though, a good day. We got through it. We're going to stay here tonight. We've got a place to dry off, clean up, and get a fresh start in the morning. Take care.
2007-06-18 02:20:34 GMT

Hello to all. It's 8:04, Sunday, PM. And uh, let's see here... Sorry. I'm here in Butte, and yeah, the day was great. Woke up, had a really good ride. Ended up seeing Peter rode with him for a while
... (call ends)

I guess I'm assuming that this was Jay Petervary (?) -Tom P.
2007-06-18 02:08:32 GMT

Hi, it's Bruce Dinsmore here. Just a quick message from Lincoln. I've arrived, it's 8 pm on Sunday the 17th. Yeah, tough day today, some pretty heavy weather. Good strong tailwind though, so that made it pretty easy. Yeah, everything is going good. Great ride this morning out of Holland Lake, there was about 12 or 13 riders all within a couple of miles of each other, so it was good to catch up with everybody. Yeah going well, we're going to head off tomorrow to Helena and maybe Basin, but it's a hilly day tomorrow so we'll see how we go. Alright, love to everybody, bye-bye.
2007-06-18 02:01:26 GMT

This is Kevin Montgomery reporting in from Ovando, mile 270. Got in about 7 o'clock, it's a quarter of eight now. Going to spend the night here. Got into much better shape than I was earlier, after the snow storm. Spent a good amount of change on some winter apparel. Got some heavy-duty gloves and what-not. Orange gloves, team orange. A bunch of us bought orange gloves at an Ace Hardware for 6 bucks. I would say there are probably 7 or 8 of us on the trail with them now. We have access to a kitchen tonight and we are definitely cooking up a storm. Hoping to roll out early and put in some more miles tomorrow because I feel really good, and the only reason I'm stopping now is because I'm really wet and I don't want to get stranded out between here and Lincoln with a bunch of wet stuff. Report back tomorrow.
2007-06-18 01:31:26 GMT

Hey this is Pete. It is 7:16 PM Sunday. I'm in Butte. Jay is here also
somewhere. I saw him a few minutes ago. We rode the better part of today together. And the weather has been really gusty, and really pretty cold. So that's about it, bye.
2007-06-18 01:09:53 GMT

Hey, it's Rick Hunter calling from lovely downtown Helena. About 6:30 Sunday night. Heading out for more fun. And, had a great day. Lots of stuff going on, lots of climbing. Saw a grizzly bear, what else; golden eagles. Having a good time. See what I can do. Alright, talk to you soon, see you, bye.
2007-06-18 00:30:45 GMT

Hi this is Andreas calling in from Ovando. I'm calling today here it's Sunday around 6:30, 7 PM. My achilles, left achilles hurts really bad. So I'm not sure I know where this is all going to end up. I will see tomorrow morning. Alright, thanks, bye-bye.
2007-06-17 23:56:20 GMT

Hi this is John Nobile checking in, I guess it's about 6 on Sunday. Unfortunately I had a brake problem, I kind of melted down my rear rotor. I can't go down the passes like this. So I'm going to hit the bike shop at 10 AM tomorrow morning and see what they can do for me and hopefully they will hook me up. And I'll be back on the trail shortly after that. I'll check in with you tomorrow. Bye.
2007-06-17 23:39:51 GMT

It's Alex Field again. I got to Lincoln a couple hours ago and realized I didn't have enough time to get over the mountains to Helena so it looks like I'll only be doing 60 miles today...
(garbled) And then hopefully, the snow and the 40 knot winds will die down by the time tomorrow morning comes around, and I can try to get to Butte or Basin by tomorrow night. But we'll see how it goes.
2007-06-17 22:21:33 GMT

Tom, hey it's Hodge. I did in fact tear my achilles. Made it to Holland Lodge and taped it up as best I could. Put in another 40 miles, and just got to the point where it was getting worse. So, I am out of the race now and I am going to have to get it looked at. But, good luck to everybody else, and I will be following it when I can. Thanks.
2007-06-17 22:01:37 GMT

Hey this is Hurly calling in. Just got to Seeley Lake a little while ago. I was having a... I got lost a couple times yesterday, a little bit off route. Otherwise, just got over Richmond Peak and got totally worked on there. Got caught in snow storm. Just chilled and drenched on that one. I'm going to grab a room, hop in the shower, try to get the temperature back up. Got a little case of the chills. That's it, I'll be heading out again. See you.
2007-06-17 21:52:14 GMT

Hi, this is Steve Wilkinson calling in from Ovando. It's 3:40 on Sunday. I'm on my way to Lincoln tonight. I made Whitefish on day one and stayed at Holland Lake last night. I'm feeling a bit tired this morning after two nights sleeping at the side of the trail, but otherwise I'm holding up fine. The weather has been generally kind to us, but there was some heavy snow over a six and a half thousand foot pass this morning. And we've got another one to come this afternoon. Hopefully things will be better there. Bye.
2007-06-17 21:52:07 GMT

Hi Tom, Steve McGuire, Seeley Lake. All is going well. A good time was had by all up on Richmond Peak this morning in the snow. Looking at rain and heading out, and having a good time. Thanks.
2007-06-17 21:37:19 GMT

Hey this is Jon Billman calling from Seeley Lake. And uh, survived the snow. Rally'd at the laundermat, and pushing toward Lincoln. Thanks, bye.
2007-06-17 21:38:37 GMT

Hi guys, it's Bruce Dinsmore and Steve Wilkinson calling in at 3:24 from Ovando. We've had a fantastic sandwich and soup in the Stray Bullet Cafe. Brilliant day yesterday riding down from Whitefish through the Missionary Mountains and Swan Mountains. Stopped at Holland Lake, had a stunning 4-course meal at dinner there. This morning headed up over Richmond Pass, and quite a bit of snow at the top. It was really sweet riding down through the trees in the snow. There was about 12 riders on the pass, hope everybody got it through. Hope Dave Hodges is doing OK because he was really struggling last night. We're heading off to Lincoln tonight, and yeah, feeling really, really good. About a 8 out of 10. Alright, love to everybody back home. Cheers now, bye-bye.
2007-06-17 20:24:15 GMT

Hey there, Matt McFee here. It's about 2:15 on Sunday. And I've been here in Seeley Lake for a couple hours. We hit a lot of snow up over the pass, which I'm sure you'll hear more about. Got borderline hypothermic, and got down into Seeley and got a room for a couple hours
here just to take a hot shower and dry my clothes and put myself back together here. Going to also see that Dave Nice and Kevin Montgomery are around and about here, but hopefully everyone makes it off the pass here. I'm going to leave here in about an hour and see if I can't make it to Lincoln still today now that everything is dry and I'm somewhat put back together. Fun, fun day. Wake up in the rain, ride up into the snow, down into the slush, can't feel my hands. See you.
2007-06-17 20:16:35 GMT

Jeff Kerby, 2 o'clock, on Saturday
(actually Sunday) made Seeley Lake. A bunch of other racers here right now. Morning was absolutely cold and miserable and got basically snowed on the whole time. Other than that, everything's great. Bye.
2007-06-17 20:06:14 GMT

Hi this is Andreas it's uh, Sunday a little after noon. I'm in Seeley Lake in the rain and after the snow. Trying to recoup and trying to make it to Lincoln tonight. Alright, bye-bye.
2007-06-17 19:46:50 GMT

Kevin Montgomery calling in from Seeley Lake. I'm in really rough shape. It just snowed on the mountain. And I didn't, definitely did not bring gear for snow. I just warmed up in some hot water for a while, but now I'm back to shivering. So I'm going to go back and warm up again. I think I might have gotten some mild hypothermia or maybe borderline, or, I don't know what the hell it is. It's warming up, so I can't get frostbite, which is good. But my gloves were just soaked, so I ended up having to take off my gloves and just have bare hands. And I ended up crashing off the bike quite a few times because I just lost my ability to grip the handlebar completely going down the hill. And, yeah, so I'm going to try to warm up and maybe head back out unless, you know, I can't warm up, in which case we'll know the other issues. Alright, bye.
2007-06-17 19:44:42 GMT

Josh Ficke here calling from Seeley Lake. Just went through a treacherous snow storm. Most of the racers I encountered were suffering from major cold. Putting on down jackets, changing gloves, being saturated. And uh, most of us are pretty cold. We were stopped at the store grabbing coffee. About to head out and go to Lincoln. And, I was hoping for a little bit better weather. Alright, talk to you later.
2007-06-17 19:36:35 GMT

Yeah this is Nathan Bay. I'm in Seeley. It's uh, Seeley Lake, it's 1:30 on Sunday, give or take. Cold. Other than that, I'm just wonderful. Bye-bye.
2007-06-17 19:13:11 GMT

This is Dave Nice reporting from Seeley Lake, mile 244.7. Cold, super-duper cold, border-line hypothermic coming down off of, uh, the pass, I forget which pass it is
(most likely Richmond Peak). Probably going to call it a day and get a really early start tomorrow morning. That's it, talk to you later.
2007-06-17 17:54:35 GMT

Hey everybody, it's Mike Gibney. It was snowing big and very cold over the pass, and so I figured I'd come into Lincoln, get a little thawed out and have a little snack. And also I wanted to wish my dad a happy Father's Day, so happy Father's Day Dad. I love you. Later.
2007-06-17 17:36:28 GMT

It's Alex Field and it's, what, 11:30 or so on Sunday, and I'm in Ovando. So, uh, I guess I'll be in Helena by sometime tonight. And I'll give another update I guess tomorrow. Thanks, bye.

Alex sounds really tired. -Tom P.
2007-06-17 15:05:45 GMT

This is Noah Dimit checking in. I'm at Holland Lake. I'm at the beginning of day three. I'm going to make it to Lincoln today. Just want to say thanks to Grandma and Grandpa. Bye.
2007-06-17 14:35:00 GMT

Hey Tom, Matthew Lee here; Lincoln, Montana, 8:15 Sunday. Got wasted by a rainstorm last night on Huckleberry Pass. So, trying to dry out today. Moving on. See you.
2007-06-17 05:46:22 GMT

Hi this is John Nobile checking in. Sorry I didn't check in last night. I got to Big Fork at about 11:30 and I couldn't find the phone number. And
I had been riding in the rain, I was pretty tired. So anyway, I'm in Lincoln tonight. I rolled in here at about 11. Got caught in a bunch of thunderstorms, there was some sleet, there was lots and lots of rain at the end of the day. Anyway I finally made it in, and hopefully I will try to make Butte tomorrow. They are forcasting more thunderstorms so we'll see what happens. OK. Thanks, bye.
2007-06-17 05:00:38 GMT

Kevin Montgomery checking in, I think it's like 10 o'clock. Rolled into... ach, I don't remember. It's mile, like, 210 at some lake. Anyways, I got to Whitefish yesterday really early and I thought I was going to keep going to keep going to Columbia Falls, however I got really sick. Pretty nauseous. I thought I was going to... I had like five french fries and
then I thought I was going to throw up like 15 Clif Bars all over Scott Hodge. Anyways, I crashed in some doorway of a business, slept on a rug. And I felt better in the morning. So I got up at 5:30 and biked out here. Thought I was going to make it a little further, but I think I tore something in my leg. I feel, like, pretty shitty. Going to get up in the morning though and keep riding. We'll see how it works out. Going to try to keep my heart rate a lot lower than I've been keeping it so far, and just, you know try to do a recovery day. Also, I don't know what's up with the suicide deer. They keep on running in front of my bike and I swear to God I'm going to impale one with my aero bars soon enough. Anyways, I'll check back in hopefully tomorrow.
2007-06-17 04:50:15 GMT

Hey this is Scott Hodge. Didn't call in yesterday, was a little groggy when I got to the pay phone, couldn't figure it out. So, it's about 10 or 11 PM. We're at Holland Lakes Lodge. I think I have torn my achilles so, I will call my doctor in the morning and see if he can help me out. And hopefully, there's a fix for this and I can continue the race. Thank you.
2007-06-17 03:19:04 GMT

Hey this is Pete. It is about 9:15 Saturday evening. I'm in Lincoln. Lots of thunderstorms, lots of rain. That's about it, bye.
2007-06-17 02:47:46 GMT

Hey everybody it's Mike Gibney calling from Seeley Lake, again*. Doing OK. It's a little rough climbing Richmond Peak after a hundred-and-something miles before it, but otherwise, hanging in there. Thanks a lot, bye.

*Mike dropped out last year at Seeley Lake. Surely when he says "again" he's referring to that. Congratulations to Mike for coming back to conquer this race. He sounds really determined, but of course a bit tired.
2007-06-17 02:04:47 GMT

Hey Tom, Matthew Lee here. I'm in Ovando, it's 8 o'clock, and I continue to suffer. Not quite recovered from the prologue, but comin' around. So I'm going to try to get over Huck
(Huckleberry) Pass tonight if I can, and maybe to Lincoln. OK, bye.
2007-06-17 00:54:02 GMT

Howdy it's Rick, Rick Hunter. I'm in Seeley Lake, it's about 6:00, 6:00 or so, 6:30. Day two. It was a hard ride. Hurtin' for certain. So I'm going to keep going a little bit tonight and see if I can get out in the woods a little bit. That's about it, hope things are going good for everyone else and I'll talk to you later, see you.
2007-06-16 23:56:02 GMT

What's happening people? It's J. P.
(Jay Petervary?). I'm here in Ovando. My first call in, it's 5:50 on Saturday, Ovando. It's currently sort of storming, just for the past half hour, thunder and lightening. Other than that the trail's been great; pretty fast, pretty smooth. I had a great day yesterday, had a wonderful sleep last night. Seems like a good day todays going. Not sure what tonight will bring us, but we'll see. Just want to say, yeah it's been a great ride so far, just need to stick with it. Alright, I've seen everything I could have so far. Scared a huge moose, scared two bears, one with three cubs. All of them were like grabbing brakes situations, and whoa. I've seen a fawn, a baby deer, on the side of the trail that was no bigger than my knee that wouldn't even move. I could have petted it if I had wanted to. Don't even think it's walking yet. So yeah, lots of good visuals, and just trying to maintain a good buzz. Thanks for everybody for getting me here, and yeah, we'll talk to you next time I check in. See you, bye.

2007-06-16 19:12:30 GMT

Hey this is Pete. It is 1:08 PM Saturday. I'm in Seeley Lake, which is about 2 miles off the course. Just getting some food. Everything is going really well. Nice weather, no problems with the bike, body feels good. So, that's about it. Bye.
2007-06-16 15:30:30 GMT

Hello, this is Matt McFee and it's about 9:30 AM here on Saturday, and I'm in Swan River, here at a gas station. Just rode about, I don't know, 20 miles through the rain but seems to be wanting to clear up here so hopefully I'll catch a break. Feeling a little better today, yesterday I really didn't drink enough water. That's about that. Hope everybody is doing well. Bye.
2007-06-16 14:14:24 GMT

Jeff Kerby, Great Divide Racer. Got a three-hour-late start yesterday. Didn't effect me too much until the sun went down and I did get a little bit lost. Ended up doing about 120 miles to get to Whitefish, but I did get to Whitefish and heading out shortly. Thanks, bye.
2007-06-16 07:44:41 GMT

Hey this is Hurly calling in. I'm in Columbia Falls, it's about 1:20. Hanging out with Dave Nice. I hit Whitefish earlier. Grabbed some burgers and Guiness. Eventually made our way down here. Trails are in awesome shape today, didn't really get rained on. Saw a mountain lion cub, got the hell out of there. That's about it. Yep, that's all.
2007-06-16 07:24:14 GMT

This is Dave Nice in Columbia Falls. It's about 1:20. Good, feel good. Got chased by a bull moose for about a quarter mile down off of Red Meadow Lakes area. Yep, it's all good. Weather's nice, and moving alot faster than I was last year. So, it's all good. Talk to you later.
2007-06-16 04:32:31 GMT

Hi, it's Bruce Dinsmore calling in from Whitefish. Just rolled in, it's 10 o'clock on Friday the 15th. We've got Josh aka Bombsquad with us, and Skinny Legs Matt Kemp and Steve Wilkinson. Absolutely stunning day again. This place is just unreal--really beautiful. Heading south tomorrow, looking to getting to Holland Lake. Body is feeling pretty good. It's lasting well after the Canada Prologue. So looking forward to some more riding. Alright, cheers guys, bye now.
2007-06-16 04:23:03 GMT

Hi this is Andreas Vogel
. Made it into Whitefish by 9:30 PM today. Staying for here tonight. So far everything is fine--on schedule. Allright, thanks. Bye bye.
2007-06-16 04:11:33 GMT

Hi Tom, it's Jon Billman, shut down in Whitefish. Good day, and we'll see you tomorrow. Thanks bye.
2007-06-16 04:12:55 GMT

Hi Tom, Steve McGuire calling from Whitefish. Today was a great day, and all is good and well. Going to hit the bag to sleep here, and then head south. Thanks, bye bye.
2007-06-16 01:24:23 GMT

Hey, this is Pete. It is 7:19. I'm just right outside of Whitefish. Weather is pretty darn good right now. Little bit of rain. That's about it. Alright, Bye.
2007-06-16 03:08:34 GMT

Hey Tom, this is Matthew Lee calling from Columbia Falls. It's about quarter til 9. I rolled into Whitefish at about 7:50. And, today hurt. Have to thank Jay Petervay for pushing a really hot pace. It'll be interesting to see, of the three guys out in front of me, how they hold up in the next few days, because they were flying. OK. More tomorrow. Bye.
2007-06-16 03:28:18 GMT

Hey this is Mike Gibney. I've made it a little bit past Whitefish. Feeling OK. And, there's three people that know what I mean when I say, this time I'm not lying. Anyway, thanks a lot. Bye.

OK, Mike is one of the racers who was not in our pre-race roster. He raced last year, was in a very competitive postition, then dropped after reaching Seeley Lake, MT. He clearly had a score to settle. His comment "this time I'm not lying" is quite mysterious, but certainly sounds like a reference to his aborted in 2006. -Tom P.

2007-06-16 03:37:42 GMT

Hey, Chapel Hill Billy Ashley Mckenzie reporting in from Columbia Falls. I guess it's a little after 9:00. I rolled by Whitefish at 8:25 and kept rolling on into Columbia Falls. Sitting down to grab a little grub and maybe head a little further. Alright, hope everybody's doing great. Later.
2007-06-16 03:27:48 GMT

Hey this is Rick Hunter from Watsonville, CA. I'm south of Columbia Falls about 10 or 15 miles calling from a school yard. That's about it, it's about 9:30, I'm heading south towards towards Big Fork I think it is, and Pass maybe. So all's well, feeling good, and Pete and Jay I think are ahead of me. OK, rock on, Later.
