2007-06-20 14:11:35 GMT

Hey, this is Ashley McKinzie reporting in. We stayed just the other side of Fleecer Ridge last night. Then came across to Wise River, it's about 8 o'clock now. We're getting breakfast then going to hit this long road section which we're really looking forward to. Talk to you later.
2007-06-20 14:04:01 GMT

Hey there, Matt McFee. It's about 10 'til 8 on Wednesday morning. I'm at Wise River. And uh, that's about it. I got about 105 miles in last night, and uh, feel pretty good today already. And it's all pretty good. It's not snowing.
2007-06-20 13:54:04 GMT

Uh, Kevin Montgomery reporting in. I guess this is the end of my race. I rode my bike to Helena and uh, the shock got worse. I broke the lockout and I went to the bike shop and investigated my options yesterday morning, and
basically it either looked like ordering a new shock, which would basically mean that I wouldn't make it to Steamboat in 13 days, or buying a new bike which wasn't exactly feasible either. So, I kind of regret it, but you know, it's you know, not a big deal. I feel fresh so I'm going to go home and explore other projects. I'm going to try to section hike some of the Appalachian Trail.

I would like to give a quick thanks to Jeff Boatman from Carousel Design Works. His bags are awesome and any GDR racer in the future should definitely use them because they made it... he didn't say they were definitely rain-proof or anything, but they made it through all the snow storms and what-not and kept my gear dry.

Yeah, had a great time this year, and hopefully some other time in the future I can try to tackle this race again.
2007-06-20 13:37:20 GMT

Hey this is Pete, I'm just a little ways outside of Flagg Ranch. It is 7:30 in the morning. Sounds like Jay's about 45 minutes-an hour ahead at this point. Yeah, that's about it, nothing really to report. Just a long, kinda hard day. The weather has been fairly good except for a few headwinds. Um, there's something called a rail trail just out where you go through Idaho. It was just incredibly soft and bumpy, and just real slow-going for about 20 miles yesterday. So, that kinda zapped me. But um, anyway, off to a good start this morning. Bye.
2007-06-20 10:51:01 GMT

Yeah, it's Alex Field. It's Tuesday night, Polaris...
(garbled--call ends).

Another very poor phone connection, but Alex did leave a very short message (I heard him hang up perhaps four garbled words after the word "Polaris"). He sounded very tired.
2007-06-20 05:58:19 GMT

Hi, this is John Nobile checking in. It's uh, Tuesday night, and I just got to Lima. I was only able to make it to Butte yesterday because I had to do the bike shop stuff in Helena and get some parts for my bike. Anyway I got a late start and I didn't get too far. But anyway I did 190 today, and um, hopefully I'll have another good day tomorrow and be at Flagg Ranch. Thanks, bye.
2007-06-20 04:28:00 GMT

Hey, this is Pete, calling in from Flagg Ranch
(garbled... call ends)

This message was extremely low in volume, as if he were calling from a defective phone or over a very poor line. The time was just before 10:30 PM, Tuesday evening, July 19.

2007-06-20 02:26:52 GMT

This is Dave, checking in from Butte um, it's like 10 after 8, 20 after 8, something like that. Er, not Butte, Helena, um, I'm in Helena. Uh, absolutely cooked. My left foot feels like it's going to fall off, still having issues with it. But, um, going to sleep good tonight and see how it's feeling in the morning. Yeah, that's it. Bye.
2007-06-20 02:26:48 GMT

Hey Tom, Matthew Lee here. I am in Big Springs. Heading towards Flagg, but not in Flagg. Pete's out in front of me, somewhere between Jay and I. I expect he'll be at Flagg tonight. I'm sure you'll hear from him. That's about it. It was h-o-t today, compared to what we've been used to. Anyway, hope you're good. Bye.
2007-06-20 02:19:40 GMT

Hey Tom, hey I forgot to say happy birthday to my daughter, she's going to be one tomorrow. So happy birthday Ava
. Sorry I'm not there for your birthday, we'll have a party when I get back. Bye.

(This is clearly Jon Billman, even though he did not say so in the message.) -Tom P.
2007-06-20 02:02:53 GMT

Hi Tom, it's John Billman, I'm in Butte, Montana. Good day today, great weather, got to see some of that famous Big Sky. And um, great homemade chicken soup. Feeling stronger, ready for tomorrow, bye.
2007-06-20 01:40:48 GMT

Hi, it's Steve Wilkinson calling in from Wise River. I'm here with Bruce Dinsmore and Matt Kemp. We've had another outstanding day's riding. I forget where we've come from this morning. We're just going to get some food here and think about pressing on a bit further. Bye.
2007-06-20 01:35:28 GMT

Uh, JP here. It's 7:20 PM, Tuesday, and uh, I just got into Flagg Ranch. And uh, had a decent day. Things are taking shape. Waking up, and taking a long time before I can actually sit down, due to the rear end. And uh, had quite a bumpy ride on that stretch from Island Park, on the railroad bed. And uh, other than that, you know, starting to get hot. The heat's here. So... Just uh, going OK though. So I'm just clicking away. Feels good to be here in Wyoming. So, just feeling the vibes from everyone that knows I'm here. Alright, I'll check in with you next time. Thanks.
2007-06-20 00:35:34 GMT

This is Nathan Bay. I think it's a little after six, I'm in Butte. And uh, I'm going to press on, and see how it goes. Bought a new rear brake today, and just made the shop by 15 minutes here in Butte. And I'm going to eat something then I'm on the road. Alright, bye-bye.
2007-06-20 00:26:11 GMT

Uh, this is Jeff Kerby, just made it to Butte. Not sure what time it is, but it's Tuesday afternoon. And it was actually nice weather for once. Great. And other than that, I'm not spending the night here, sooner I get out of Montana the better, so, I don't know how far I'll get, but we'll see.
2007-06-19 23:35:16 GMT

Hey, howdy, it's Rick Hunter calling from Lima, Montana. About 5 o'clock, 5:30. Just covered ground from Grasshopper Creek. Still a hard ride, even though it wasn't that hilly, but uh, managed. I'm going to keep going towards Red Rock Lake. And see what's up with out there. Shout out to my friend Kirk, hope you're feeling better. This one's for you. Fireroads forever. Alright, stay in touch. Later. Bye.
2007-06-19 22:15:52 GMT

Matt McFee here. It's about 4:11. I am in Butte, at the Outdoorsman bike shop. And these guys are the best. I'm by myself here today. Feeling decent, a little flat in the legs, but pretty good spirits. Started in Helena today. I will probably try to go until 8 or 9 o'clock tonight, get a little over 100 miles. That's it, bye.
2007-06-19 22:22:03 GMT

Josh Ficke and Ashley McKenzie calling from Butte, we spent last night in Grizzly Gulch. It's about 4 o'clock. Just went to the Outdoorsman, right here in Butte, and they took care of the bike while I went and got some chinese. They're the best. So, make sure racers stop there. Good stuff. We're headed out, and it's nice and warm today. Lots of water. Bye.
2007-06-19 22:19:22 GMT

Hello Josh Ficke and Ashley McKenzie calling from Butte. We spent last night in grizzly gulch. Crazy. We had to fight a few bears off to keep our food...
(Call ends)
2007-06-19 18:08:42 GMT

Hi, it's Bruce Dinsmore here, calling in. It's just coming up to 12 o'clock on Tuesday the 19th of June. We've ridden over from Basin this morning into Butte. We've just had a pizza and some really top service from Rob Leipheimer in the Outdoorsman, so big up to the guys in the shop there, thanks very much. Um, yeah, so an update so far, it's end of week one for us guys coming out of Canada. We've done 700 miles in 7 days. That's 70 hours in the saddle. Body's
holding up pretty good, legs are strong, managed to clean climb all the way up on the Lava Mountain Trail last night. So I was really pleased with that, muscles are feeling strong. Knees are a little bit achey in the morning, but that's not bad for a 40-year-old. And um, yeah, little bit of bruising to the outside of my hands from gripping on too tight last night coming off the mountain in the dark. And uh, everything else is going really well. Had quite a few little mechanicals with the bike, nothing to worry about. And uh, we're heading down to hopefully Wise River and then heading south from there. I think I got my distances mixed up yesterday when I was saying to the boys that I was looking at heading into Butte, they realized that that was something like 140 miles and 15,000 foot of climbing over 6 passes, and they thought I was a little bit mad, but I think I mixed that up with Basin. So yesterday we managed 100 miles, well about 105 miles and 5 brilliant passes all around 6-7000 foot, yeah about 11,000 foot of climbing yesterday, so, a good day, a good day. And we're all feeling really strong, Steve Wilkinson and Matt Kemp are with me, and it's a beautiful day in Montana. Love to everybody, bye-bye.
2007-06-19 17:24:06 GMT

Ah, John Hurly calling in from Helena, about to leave here. Got in late. Got stuck last night out on uh, the 2nd Great Divide Pass, trying to make it through all three. Got stuck on there for hours, just lost in the dark, it got chilly. Slept for about an hour and a half, then got back up, found my way back onto the route and then kept going. I'm in Helena now, got some breakfast here, about to head out. Heading out to Butte. Beep Beep Zip Bang

2007-06-19 16:24:18 GMT

Uh, hi Tom. Steve McGuire calling. New strategy, uh, both racks are broke. I'm surprised I made it into Helena. I'm trashed, but my legs are surprisingly quite well. Uh, my plan is to strap my gear on my back and roll into Butte. I don't think I'm going to have... if I have racks sent up I'm going to miss the cut-off time. But uh, anyway, great route, great people. If getting trashed riding can be a good time, this is about as good as it gets. Thanks, bye.
2007-06-19 15:50:00 GMT

Hey Tom, Matthew Lee here in Lima, Montana. I finally get the chance to use sunscreen today. I'm taking off all the armwarmers and stuff. Thank goodness. Anyway, I'm heading into Idaho today, which is the land of my people, so I'm excited about that. Alright? Oh it's uh, 9:45
(AM)OK bye.
2007-06-19 14:38:31 GMT

It's Alex Field, on uh, must be Tuesday morning. And I'm in Butte, I got here last night. Yeah, it would be good to know where more people are so I could see if I could try and ride with someone. Apart from that ...
(call terminates)
2007-06-19 13:42:08 GMT

Hi, it's a quick update from Bruce Dinsmore and Matt Kemp. Rolled into Basin late last night, had a bit of a mechanical on the way up to the Lava Trail (Lava Mountain Trail #244). So, late arrival here. Just having an early breakfast and heading south today. Hopefully, get to Wise River and head south from there maybe to Elkhorn Springs (Elkhorn Hot Springs). Great, great day yesterday, good weather, and some stunning riding up on Lava Trail. Best bit of the route so far. Alright, love to everybody, bye-bye.
2007-06-19 13:32:50 GMT

Hi this is Steve Wilkinson calling in from Basin. It's half past seven and we're just about to head out. We got here at half past 9 last night. The weather was in our favor yesterday. We had a superb ride. Topped off by some nice technical singletrack at about 90 miles, up and down, that was superb. Quite a tough day though. We're pressing on towards Polaris. We might not make it that far, but we'll see how we go. Bye.
The riders are getting tired, and as a result they are leaving shorter messages and talking slower. Helps me out!

Seriously, they seem to have enjoyed much better weather today, and almost all of them are just plugging along. Many riders in Helena.

Jay Petervay seems to be pulling ahead. He made Lima in early evening, and it sounded like he was going to go on a little further last night. Pete Basinger got to Lima late, and he was clearly ready to stop for the day. No word from Matthew Lee was in Wise River early in the afternoon, but that's around 130 miles north of Lima on the route.

That's were we are right now. Lots of the route is ahead, and anything could happen.
2007-06-19 06:58:40 GMT

Hi Tom it's Jon Billman calling in from Helena. Got a little schooling in orienteering today, and got to do some night riding as a consequence. So uh, anyway, uh, weather is good,
looking better. Guess we're rolling south toward, where the hell? Red Lodge. So, OK Thanks, and hi to everyone at home, miss you guys. Bye.
2007-06-19 05:31:19 GMT

Hi Tom, Steve McGuire. Rolled in to Helena at about 10 PM. Nice three climbs, last one wasn't so bad. Had terrific weather in the afternoon. Feeling good physically. Hope to get some sleep tonight, and uh, back on the road tomorrow. Thanks.
2007-06-19 04:47:35 GMT

Hey this is Pete, it is Monday. I am calling in from Lima. It was a pretty tough day, so I'm going to hang out here and get some sleep. That's it, bye.
2007-06-19 04:28:04 GMT

Hey this is Noah Dimmit. Calling in about 10 o'clock in Helena. I'm going to stay here tonight, head out in the morning. Just wanted to say hi to all the messengers in San Diego: Ride or Die.
2007-06-19 04:35:29 GMT

Hey there, Matt McFee here. I'm at the Perkins in Helena Montana at about 10:22. We've actually been here a little while, about to sit down to eat. Pretty good today, lots of climbing, but no snow. And uh, we're going to eat, check into a hotel, get an early start, and feeling pretty darned good. Later.
2007-06-19 04:22:44 GMT

Yeah, this is Nathan Bay. I'm in Helena, and uh, little rough around the edges. But uh, been holding out alright. It's uh, 10 o'clock. Alright, bye-bye.

2007-06-19 02:13:45 GMT

This is Jeff Kerby, just got into Helena, about 7:30. Weather was better, still really pretty cold with the wind, especially in June. I have no idea why anyone would live here. I'm starting to understand why it's like one of the meth capitols of the US, it's too cold to do anything else. Anyway, hoping for better tomorrow. Bye.
2007-06-19 01:52:54 GMT

Hi this is Mike Gibney. It's about 7:30, Monday evening. Got kind of a late start from Helena, with a little bit of rack issues. And now I'm in Butte. And I am trashed. Thanks a lot. Later.
2007-06-19 01:33:50 GMT

JP here, it's uh, 7:30 PM Monday. I'm in uh, Lima. And uh, yeah. Today was just a bit warmer. Sun's out down here, so, first day of sun. But uh, relatively easy going riding. Just a bit of grinding out some long climb. Other than that it went pretty good. I just about made it with the little bit of water I took, and uh, I'm sitting good right now. Fat and healthy, so I'll be moving on. And uh, hello to the Idaho boys. Be there in the morning. Just... I'll be feeling ya. Thanks. Talk to you soon.
2007-06-19 00:54:41 GMT

Hey it's Rick Hunter from Wise River. About 6:30. Had some good luck, then some bad luck, then more bad luck but uh, gonna motor on. And uh, report from the shopkeep here at the mercantile is the Matt Lee was in around 2. There's three tracks in front of me. That's about it, I'll talk to you later. Seeya.
2007-06-18 23:56:58 GMT

The adventures with the animal kingdom continue with Dave Nice. I'm in Lincoln. Left foot still kind of giving me some trouble from pinching it between a pedal and a rock the other day, so it's a little tender. I'm going to grab something to eat, here in Lincoln. Maybe head out, though I may crash, I don't know. Anyway, talk to you later. Thanks Tom, bye.
2007-06-18 21:16:27 GMT

It's Monday 3 o'clock. It's Matt Kemp, Steve Wilkinson and Bruce Dinsmore. We just arrived in Helena and we're heading out to Basin or something. Change in the weather, it's looking pretty good and we have a nice tailwind. Cheers then, bye.
2007-06-18 20:47:12 GMT

Hey Tom, Matthew Lee here. I'm in Wise River, Montana, and I'm starting to feel better. It's about 2:30. Bye.
2007-06-18 19:25:13 GMT

It's Alex Field, um, I don't even know what day it is,
(it's Monday) but it's 1:30 and I'm in Helena. Looks to be, um, well after a partly wet morning, that turned good, I managed, uh... yeah I'll probably get to Basin or Butte by tonight sometime, but we'll see. But uh, anyway, I guess I'll report in again later.

Man, Alex sounds spent. Hope the improving weather helps him keep it up.
2007-06-18 17:59:42 GMT

Kevin Montgomery calling in from Lincoln, it's about 11 AM Monday morning. I'm feeling physically awesome. It's you know getting sunny, I feel really good, really fresh. Really ready to just go out and hammer the race. Unfortunately I've had a whole score of mechanicals. I broke my Old Man Mountain rack, I cracked it in two welds. My cycle computer stopped working and, so I'm going to have to buy a new one. And anyone who's done this knows it's impossible to navigate the route without it. And, going down Huckleberry Pass in Lincoln I just blew out my rear shock. So, I um, you know the bike's completely compressed, and the geometry is all messed up, and it's tough to ride. Anyways, it's going to cost me a lot of money to fix all this, and I'm going to have to overnight some stuff. So I really have to sit back and figure out what I'm going to do. I'm not exactly wealthy, I just graduated college and uh, my credit card, if I fix this bike up, is going to be beyond maxed out. So I don't know how I'm going to pay for this stuff, so I've got to kind of sit down and figure out what I'm going to do before I continue on.
2007-06-18 16:10:23 GMT

Let's see here, Monday morning, 10:10. It's JP, checking in. I'm just here at this Grasshopper Inn, getting fat breakfast. And uh, that's just this side of Polaris. And so, just sort of moving along pretty good, I feel pretty good, I've been getting some good sleep. But uh, just the everyday activity I was going to say is probably adding up. Maybe just going a bit numb, but that's probably OK. And uh, just focusing on moving forward. So I'm just going to enjoy my breakfast and uh, have a good one, everything's going OK. Bye.
2007-06-18 16:19:53 GMT

Hey this is Andreas. Sadly I have to call in and officially quit the race. My achilles is so bad I can hardly walk. This is really really a sad day, seeing all the other folks leaving this morning from Ovando, and I get to stay behind. Well, it was a great experience so far, and there's always another year. Alright, bye-bye.

It's always sad to get the message from a racer who is forced to abandon. Andreas sounds regretful, but he also sounds like someone who knows what he's doing and accepts the fact with resignation. Heal fast Andreas. -Tom P.
2007-06-18 12:58:39 GMT

Hi this is Steve Wilkinson calling in from Lincoln at 7 o'clock. I stayed in a motel here last night, it's good to get my stuff dried. I'm heading out now, hopefully going to make it to Basin tonight. Weather has been pretty bad though so, it could be quite tough. I'll just have to see how it goes. Bye.
2007-06-18 06:29:39 GMT

Hey this is Jeff Kerby. It's 11:30, actually now it's 12:25 AM. Just got into Lincoln about half an hour ago. Gonna get some rest. Miserable weather, all day, very consistent. I'm starting to really hate Montana. Bye.
2007-06-18 04:50:00 GMT

Hey this is Gibney calling from Helena, Sunday evening. It was a rough weather day. And, you know it's hard out there for a pimp.

Mike sounded beat. I've heard that the "hard out there for a pimp" thing was a quote from the movie Hustle and Flow. So Mike was having a little joke. -Tom P.
2007-06-18 04:06:29 GMT

Hey this is Andy Buchanan. Sorry I didn't get back to posting anything but, on the, yeah what was it, the first night I rolled into Whitefish you know somewhere around 9:30-10 o'clock with a big group of guys. Spent the night under the bridge with Nathan and Noah. And, you know on the first day on the climb I broke part of my frame where my derailleur hang mount is, or part of it. Had no shifting on the front for the rest of the time. And then it proceeded to break the rest of the way through on the Crane Mountain downhill. So I abandoned and went into Swan Lake. Spent the night, called my brother and he came up and picked me up. My frame was you know, pretty much a failure that can't be fixed. So, it was a pleasure riding with everybody, I had a great time. It's too bad I couldn't keep going. Maybe next year, we'll have to see. Thanks again, and may everybody ride hard. Bye.

Sunday, June 17, 2007

Well kids, that was a pretty good piece of transcribing. I went out and spent most of the day clearing downed trees off 7 miles of singletrack above 9,000 feet elevation with a chain saw. Then I got home to see that I had twenty-some messages to transcribe. And while I was transcribing, perhaps another 10 came in.

So you all have some good reading to keep you from needing to do any work on a Monday morning. And I'm getting callouses on my typing fingers.

Sunday on the Great Divide Route was about cold wet weather. The riders out in front seemed to fair the best. Riders who were north of Lincoln seemed to feel a pretty sharp bite from the weather, with a snow gauntlet on the top of 6,500 foot Richmond Peak.

One rider, Scott Hodge has confirmed that he has had to stop racing because of a torn achilles tendon. Andreas Vogel has a very painful achilles, he will decide whether he can continue tomorrow. Andy Buchanan reportedly broke his bike frame. I haven't heard a confirmation that he is dropping; perhaps he can secure a replacement.

Matthew Lee appears to have leap-frogged Pete Basinger and Jay Petervary. Matthew is in Basin at just after 9 PM, and Pete and Jay were together in Helena as of 7:15. Basin is about 42 miles south of Helena on the route.

Oops. Pete and Jay actually called from Butte, not Helena. So Matt is still trailing those two. Sorry for the mixup.

Also, for some chit-chat about the race, see the mtbr thread about the ongoing Great Divide Race.
2007-06-18 03:39:35 GMT

Hey Tom, this is Matthew Lee calling from Basin. And, I know we're supposed to be brief, but let me just say this is the most dynamic day I've ever had on the Divide Route, phenomenal. Very technical, and, to top it off we've had snow, driving rain, insane winds. I really want to get to Butte tonight, but the trail heads straight west, into the wind. So, I'm a little bit torn up at the moment. And it's 25 miles to Butte, so, 30 mile headwind is not what I need. So I'm eating some dinner, and looking for courage.
